Episode 6 of Decoded is here! This time round we're joined by Nigerian artist Lojay. Filmed in-studio, we invite a CLASH co-signed artist into the studio, dissecting their creative process through a thoughtful interrogation of influences, themes and iconography. Building on the promise of his breakout Sarz-produced 'LV N ATTN' project, Lojay's new 7-track EP ‘Gangsta Romantic’, charts the next stage in his evolution as an artist taking the reins. Coming into his own as a producer - toeing the line between jaunty amapiano-inflected beats and more mellow, languorous rhythms - 'Gangsta Romantic' features intimate confessionals exploring the cycles of romantic relationships; navigating temptation, desire, heartache and loss. In conversation, Lojay shares the unifying thread in his work: his vocal production. Taking cues from the melismatic style present in Afrobeats, Lojay’s expression of romantic melodrama has never sounded more potent. Lojay reveals the inspiration behind key songs like 'MOTO', the sonic details and intricacies we may miss on first listen, and the deeper connection he wants to foster with listeners through songs that will endure beyond chart recognition.
