The Sand People of Tatooine, have cultivated a fierce albeit complex reputation in the Star Wars universe. From their first on screen appearance, attacking a young Luke Skywalker & company. To the vicious slaughter of their own Tusken camp, at the hands of a retribution seeking Anakin Skywalker, Due to the brutal mauling & torture his mother faced, in their care. Ostensibly the Tusken raiders, appeared as …well, mindless raiders, living up to their namesake. Yet, in other media such as legends & most recently in The Book of Boba Fett, the sand people have been shown as more than mindless animals. Instead garnering new found fans enamored by the proud ways of the nomadic clan & newly shared familial bonds. However, in this video, I wish to delve into a particular incident in Knights of the Old Republic, in which you can choose to kill, or aid the Sand people… and outline an argument as to why wiping out every member therein, is the most humane course of action. Part 3. The Tusken threat To form the argument of why the Sand People need to be stopped, we must first explore who wants to stop them & why. When heading into Anchorhead & meeting the local Czerka representative, she will be seen arguing with a Duros about a Sand people problem. IN fact, you cannot even leave Anchorhead without a hunting license as it is deemed too dangerous for anyone to venture into the desert wastes, as Sand Poeple hunting parties have been butchering the local miners. The czerka representative then offer a sizeable bounty for Gaffi sticks to eliminate the Tuskens Reflexively this seems to be an ethically repugnant task, bulldozing the natives out of the way so Czerka can harvest more resources. Congruently, the Czerka have been seen on multiple worlds as an amoral entity; not only are they allied with the Sith, but they frequently use underhanded means for their ends, such as stealing from rivals, acting on purely financial motivations, employing the use of violence and slavery, hiring mercenaries, smuggling weapons, etc. And will often ask the player to perform some jobs which would generally be considered "dirty". Hence why, outside the office is a local duros who was seen inside arguing with the local representative, informs you that there is a peaceful solution urging you to parlay with the natives. Superficially, this seems like the no brainer, save the poor desert dwellers, net well earned lightside points, right? RIGHT? Historically, an ongoing motif in Star Wars is those who side with Nature eventually triumph over those who try & abuse science & machinery for the advancement of their evil empire. So, we have established the Czerka are generally evil & openly instruct you to wipe the natives of the land… which begs the question: how could one ever argue ,in good conscience, to slaughter the sand people AND as the right thing to do?? Well, the beauty of a well written RPG such as KOTOR is that not everything is black & white as George Lucas’ space operas. Which I will attempt prove shortly, however first to get a proper grasp of the moral buoyancy of the situation, we must not take either party by their initial word, and instead dispassionately assess the facts. To do so, we must get the other side of the story directly, from the banthas mouth & speak to the very Sand People’s chieftain who we are contracted to kill. Departing Anchorhead & heading to the Sand People enclave, we spy a handful of civilian miners, in a Sand People ambush.
