CASCADE RIVER (PART 3 OF 3)

CASCADE RIVER (PART 3 OF 3) is where the white water portion of our trip picks up. We are headed downstream but the uphill toil has set us back several days. We are forced to get up at first light and paddle until dark. Little sleep and the physical exhaustion has started to takes its toll on our bodies and souls. Our plan was to have a final camp on the shores of Lake Superior but we would end up needing to set up camp in the gnarled bushes above the final canyon and falls 3 kilometers from the shores of Lake Superior. The last morning was a frozen, joyless sprint to the lake to meet our pick up boat. We did the trip in 7 days and with our pace we should have taken at least 9. We had A LOT of things go our way that could have reasonably not gone our way. The weather was great. The bugs were a non-issue. Nobody got hurt. No gear was lost. No food was lost. Had any one of these things not gone our way we may have found ourselves in serious shit.
