Southern Locomotives Ltd have well established themselves as a leader in preservation, in the field of restoring and overhauling Bulleid pacifics. As such, they have forged close ties to a few heritage railways and other societies, through the common goal of keeping the legacy of Oliver Bulleid alive in the years since the end of southern steam. Based in the Isle of Purbeck, the Swanage Railway has played host to many of SLL's locomotives in preservation, with the majority of the SLL fleet spending periods based on the Dorset branch line. One such example being 34070 "Manston", which has been based on the Swanage Railway since first returning to steam in preservation in 2008. Typically, SLL ensure their locomotives appear in immaculate condition when they emerge from Herston Works. However, during 34070's recent overhaul, SLL were approached by the Swanage Railway enquiring as to whether they could avoid repainting "Manston", and instead bring the pacific back in a weathered condition. The cladding team at Southern Locomotives Ltd obliged, with the result being that when "Manston" returned to service following the overhaul in 2022, enthusiasts were given the rare opportunity to see an authentically worn-down and weathered Bulleid pacific in action. Despite the appearance, a lot of conservation work has been carried out by the cladding team at SLL, to ensure the Bulleid was still fit for use. This included a significant amount of rust removal and patch repairs to the old paint work, while new smoke deflectors had to be made due to the previous ones suffering from deterioration. This meant the new deflectors had to be carefully colour matched to the worn paintwork on the rest of the locomotive so they wouldn't look out of place. When asked, the head of the cladding team stated, "A lot of work has gone into making her look this rough". Recorded over two days, 34070 would work the steam diagram on the SR's Green timetable. It's a refreshing change of pace from the usual pristine locomotives seen in preservation, and does well to honour 34070's working life; 34070 spent its final years allocated to 72A Exmouth Junction, appearing in a similarly rundown aesthetic.
