How to start on the path of choice-based handling and fear-free interactions with your snake family member. Under human care or captive management we can’t eliminate fear 100% or allow snakes to choose 100% of the time if they will be handled; however, we can strive to incorporate choice as much as is safe for us and our snakes. We can minimize fear by using the least intrusive and minimally aversive methods possible during interactions with and management of our snakes. This video briefly outlines how to get started with most snakes. If your snake is non-venomous, can see you and you can see it, is not flighty, is not likely to dart off, and is reasonably calm these methods have proven successful. Remember to watch your snake’s body language and don’t move on from one step to the next until they are remaining comfortable and relaxed, in the green zone. If they’re in the yellow zone, spend more time with the step you’re on and if they’re in the red zone, stop. If the snake is highly stressed or distressed productive learning cannot occur and progress will not be made. Stop and start again when the snake is in the green or yellow zone.
