Here’s an interesting little exercise for some of you to try! We have a fairly basic scale of B Dorian (3 sharps) but played (mostly) as double stopped 6ths. Most important that you warm up your double stop bowing first, just playing open strings so that you get a good and even sound. Don’t overlook this bit, as it is key to being able to play all double stops well. There are 2 sections that you should be concentrating on, these are separated by the moment where you play the open A/E (strings, which of course is a 5th). Use this A/E as a separator so that you have 2 distinct sections to work with. Take your time to play each section well, maintaining good tone (with the bow) and clear intonation. Don’t rush! This could also be started on the G/D strings, producing an E Dorian version.
