The Woolly Mammoth: A Legend of the Cenozoic Era | Pre-Historic Animals Documentary

Some animals define the eras in which they live, or have lived. Today, the animal kingdom is defined by the big cats of Africa and Asia, or the huge mammals of the African savannahs. Go back to the time of the dinosaurs, and the likes of Tyrannosaurus, or Triceratops have gone down in history to represent these extinct reptiles as a whole. Prior to that, perhaps it was early synapsids such as the sail-backed Dimetrodon, or maybe even the bizarre invertebrates of the Cambrian that define the Paleozoic Era. For the Cenozoic Era, the time period that followed the demise of the dinosaurs, however, there can be only one contender - Mammuthus, otherwise known as the woolly mammoth. These extinct elephants can be found in museums, books and even films the world over, just about anywhere that concerns the Cenozoic Era. Our early ancestors and relatives depended on them for survival, and their existence in the first place was a huge part of the lives and cultures of some of these groups of early people. The largest continuous biome the world has ever seen, in fact, is named after these gargantuan mammals - the Mammoth Steppe - and even the word mammoth alone has gone on to become one of our most emotive words in the English language to describe something large. What about the finer details of these iconic mammals, though? How did such a specialised and unique beast come to be in the first place, and how did it eventually die out? Just how important were the woolly mammoths to early groups of Homo sapiens living on the Mammoth Steppe, and how did they interact with them? How did the mammoths themselves live, in fact, and where could they be found? 0:00 Intro 2:32 What Exactly Was A Woolly Mammoth 8:36 Evolution And Distribution 12:02 The Mammoth Lifestyle 18:04 Significance To Early Humans 26:32 How Did Mammoths Die Out? 30:15 Cultural Significance 32:11 Outro - Is This Really The End?
