Appalachian Trail - Carvers Gap to Erwin - Day 1 4K

Seventh backpacking trip of 2024 ... August 22-25, 2024 Included ... me, mom & Sally Day 1... 12.38 miles / 2,336’ elevation gain (Carvers Gap to Greasy Creek Gap) I met Mom at the Chestoa parking area just across the bridge from Uncle Johnny's hostel... where we finished loading her pack. We locked up the car and drove up to Carvers Gap and after enjoying the last amenities we'd see for the next 3-1/2 days (don't ever underestimate the nicety of a toilet!) - we hit the trail. The first couple of miles are uphill through a beautiful forest which was predominantly spruce fir. We checked out the highest shelter along the AT (at least that's my understanding) - Roan High Knob shelter. This was a great camping area - several nice campsites even around the shelter - it's just all uphill off the AT to the shelter. We took a break at the old cloudland Hotel area where we watched the clouds move in and out. Afterwards, we made our way downhill for almost 4 miles ... zigzagging your way down the mountain. At 9 miles in you cross Little Rock Knob ... which had a couple of nice vantage points looking northward. By this time, we realized how much we'd slowed down earlier in the day and were now trying to raise the diminishing daylight to find camp. I'll note that for this trip - we'd (well I'd) decided to do 2 hammock setups - which even in this section proved to be a bit of a challenge finding room for. At 11.48 according to the Far@ut app - this site had potential according the comments for hammock setups. I'd trusted that... and unfortunately was proven wrong - there was room for one setup not 2. So, we can to continue on ... and finally found a great camping site in Greasy Creek Gap just as the sun was setting behind the hills that surrounded us. While I set up the hammocks ... Mom went and grabbed water from a nearby spring (this was a blessing - because most of the water sources we passed were dry). We settled in by the fire, enjoyed a great dinner where mom gave me a fresh hot pepper that left my mouth burning for a bit - and we had a good laugh about that! We called it a night and fell asleep listening to the owls! Things to note ... there wasn't very many water sources and some low flow ones were dry! The best views were from the Cloudland Hotel ruins and Little Rock Knob. Most all of the campsites were nice but definitely more tent friendly.
