Mike Thompson's RV Service Tech, Keith Norby, shows you how to check your RV Roof Sealant for cracks. Regular roof inspection can help RV owners to identify cracking before causing potential damage. Before we get started, it is important to consider the following safety recommendations: 1. Keep your keys with you, you don't want someone else to drive away while you are on the roof 2. Ensure your vehicle is turned off with the parking brake set 3. Park on a level surface 4. Check with your vehicle's manufacturer's recommendations for walking on the roof 5. Make sure the roof is clean and dry to prevent loss of traction when walking The focus of our roof inspection is looking for cracks in the roof sealant that can allow water to enter your RV and cause damage. Although most RV roofs are put down as a single sheet, you will find sealant around the vents, moldings, skylights, etc. The sealant needs to be maintained to ensure that cracks don't allow for water damage. Properly maintained sealant will be smooth and free of all cracks. As sealant wears out and dries out, it will separate and crack. If it is only slightly cracked then it can be spot sealed over. Once the sealant begins to separate and show deep cracks it must be scrapped off and resealed. If you have any questions about roof sealant cracks or would like us to repair your roof, please come in to one of our 3 Service Locations.
