Compassion: Release the Better Angel of Our Nature | Dr. Pat Friman | TEDxOmaha

Compassion is a feeling. A critical feeling that makes the world around us a better place. However, it springs from a central quality that all humans have. It emerges early, retreats early and is often transient, crowded out by other qualities that are deemed more important, and are seen by others as critical to get us ahead, to make us successful. We sometimes lose sight of the feeling of compassion, which is rooted deep within our better nature, our better selves. Dr. Pat Friman asks us to be still and listen to that quality within us from which compassion emerges, to foster it, to nurture it, to encourage it to come forth. Just a little bit more. To observe and recognize it in others, and allow it to emerge within ourselves, Because. If we all foster our better selves then we can allow what Abraham Lincoln calls the better angels of our nature to have a permanent home in our lives, instead of being transient or even absent. Dr. Patrick Friman received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He is the current Vice President of Behavioral Health at Boys Town and a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska School of Medicine. He has published more than 200 scientific articles and chapters and three books, focusing on Behavioral Pediatrics and Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Friman’s work in behavioral pediatrics has concentrated on the gap between primary medical care for children on one side, and referral-based clinical child psychological and psychiatric care, on the other. Focus area of talk: Behavioral health. There is need for all of us to exhibit compassion and understanding during times of misunderstanding and conflict, where we are faced with circumstances beyond our control. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
