Wildlife, Landscapes, and Geology: AWA Talk Night with Dr. Dale Leckie

AWA was joined by Dr. Dale Leckie as he showcased his new book Wildlife, Landscapes, and Geology: An Alberta and Saskatchewan Touring Guide. From the Rocky Mountains to the rain shadow of the prairies, from deeply entrenched rivers having prairie oases, and glaciated terrain, geology strongly impacts wildlife. The relationship between wildlife and landscape is explored and exemplified in the lives of golden eagles over the Rockies, the American pika and eroding mountains, burrowing owls on glaciated plains, and greater short-horned lizards surviving in a vast rain shadow. In this richly written and illustrated guide, Leckie interweaves science with spectacular photos and beautiful art to take you to the most interesting places in the prairie provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. About the Author Dale Leckie, PhD, P Geol, is a geologist who worked at the Geological Survey of Canada and as chief geologist at a large Canadian enery company. He has edited numerous books and published widely on the geology of western Canada. He is adjunct professor in Earth, Energy, and Environment at University of Calgary. Dale has written two bestsellers on the geology and landscapes of Alberta. He lives in Calgary, AB. “Dale Leckie guides us through a fascinating journey with an engaging commentary supplemented with detailed maps and illustrations. Get ready to discover surprising corners of Saskatchewan and Alberta and new ways of looking at familiar places.” -Robin and Arlene Karpan, authors of Saskatchewan’s Best Scenic Drives. “This is a remarkable book that fills a critical gap in Alberta’s nature writing ... This book connects the forces that built and shaped our landscape with the rich diversity of creatures that live in it.” -Kevin Van Tighem, author, conservationist, and naturalist.
