Turkish Village of Evil Eye Beads: Nazarköy | Turkey Travel Guide

Nazar is a word derived from Arabic. It means sight, surveillance, attention, and other related concepts. A nazar amulet, also known as the evil eye bead, is an eye-shaped gem that is believed to protect you against the negative energies of bad people. Hindi, Urdu, Pashto, Bengali, Kurdish, Persian, Punjabi, Turkish, Azeri and other languages use the term as well. In Turkey, it is known by the name nazar boncuğu, in Greece is known as mati (the evil eye). In Persian and Afghan culture, the bead is called a cheshm nazar or nazar qurbāni. In India and Pakistan, the Hindi-Urdu slogan Chashm-e-Baddoor is used to ward off the evil eye. In the Indian subcontinent, the phrase "Nazar lag gai" is used to indicate that one has been affected by the evil eye. Same concept applies to the Turkish culture and "nazar değmek" is used to indicate that someone is under the influence of negative energies emitted by bad people. The evil eye bead has been used as a tool for protection, but nowadays this concept is not as popular as it used to be and the bead is mostly used as a decorative object in households or as a piece of jewelry. This week we are taking you to Nazarköy, a village in Turkey that produces most of the evil eye beads you see in Turkey. They are all handmade and very delicate objects.
