Craig Beals from Beals Science shows a series of chemical reactions that he uses in his high school chemistry class during Valentine's Day. The following reactions are shown: Single Replacement Reaction as calcium reacts with water to make hydrogen gas and calcium hydroxide. When phenolphthalein, a color-changing acid/base indicator, is added, the solution turns pink because the calcium hydroxide that forms is very basic. The second reaction is a combustion reaction when the hydrogen that was produced in the first reaction is lit on fire and reacts with oxygen. Finally, a double replacement reaction occurs when the calcium hydroxide produced in the first reaction interacts with hydrochloric acid.
