Mahesh-Naresh, two brothers, who grew together, lived together, worked & performed together and even death couldn't separate them. Mahesh Kanodia passed away two days ago and today Naresh followed him to the sky The duo did earn big name in Gujarati Cinema & Music, but despite making some attempts couldn't create a significant space for them in Bollywood. Mahesh was a musician & singer while Naresh became popular as actor, dancer and singer in films as wells as in the international shows of the duo organized in the various parts of the world. The duo hailed from a small village Kanoda in Gujarat, and had decades of struggle before making it big in entertainment industry. Mahesh used to sing in both male & female voices and used to sing songs of Lata Mangeshkar & Noorjehan, while Naresh, an actor & dancer, used to mimic a lot fo film stars in the stage shows of their band "Mahesh Kumar & Party". It was the historic film Tana-Riri, that brought them to notice and limelight in Cinema. Tana-Riri was the cinematic version of a legendary Gujarati folk tale from the town of Vadanagar, the native place/root of our family, the Vadnagar Nagars. Its a real historic tale of twin Nagar-sisters Taana-Riri (ताना-रिरि) from 16th Century, unfortunately not much known beyond Gujarat. The story of the twin sisters as history tells us, has Legendary singer Miaan Tansen at the core with many imaginable and unimaginable sub stories and versions. As per one of the folk-lore version, Tansen, the master of Raag Deepak, during one of the demonstration/performances of the raag at his peak, was able to lit up all the lamps of the court & palace with the power of his singing, but had himself in terrible pain as he found a huge number of blisters on his body, for the heat of the raag. He was told the only medication is, if someone can sing Raag Malhar to the perfection to invoke rains for the singing, and that specific spell of rain would surely treat Tansen's wounds as an antidote. Tansen started searching for the experts of Raag Malhaar, and soon were told about two young sisters from Vadanagar in Gujarat. Tansen reached Gujarat. He didn't reveal his real identity and posed himself as a patient who was given an advice to listen to Malhar rendition for remedy. The twin sisters and the village oblige to the request and the girls performed Raag Malhaar and could invoke rains with their power of singing. Tansen is treated. He is amazed with the singing talent, and by now his identity is revealed. The girls are invited to sing at the Royal court of Akbar, but they refuse to go. Later they agree to perform and went to Agra first and then Delhi. Daribaan Kalaan in Chandani Chowk street in old Delhi became the place for Gujaratis arriving. The Shiva/Hatkeshwar Temple for Nagars still exists in those lanes of Delhi and the annual Hatkeshwar Mahtsav still takes place in the temple. The other version has it that Akbar & Tansent during one of their tours found about the talent of the two sisters and they visit the village in disguise. Later when the girls are invited to the royal court, the girls refuse to go. All versions had a sad end to the story of Tana-Riri, where the twin sisters opted for a suicidal death, at a very young age. Vadanagar has a dedicated temple of Tana-Riri with statues of the sisters. The film featured Kanan Kaushal and Bindu in the title roles playing the two sisters Tana & Riri.. Arvind Pandya played the Tansen. The film deserved a better cast & director, but the music of the film was much better than the film. Here another set of amazing sisters Asha Bhosle & Usha Mangeshkar singing Malhar for Tana-Riri composed by Mahesh-Naresh Remembering the Duo with their memorable creation. Mahesh-Naresh #RIP
