Back in October 2019 we did a four day trip exploring the upper reaches of South West Arm, a tributary of Port Hacking, south of Sydney. This was the first real test of our six month old Cygnet 20 ‘Tide Rider’ getting up the shallowest of waterways and then being used as a base for further exploring by kayak. With its shallow draft (keel and rudder raised) and flat canoe hull bottom it proved ideal and we had a wonderful four days on the water. This trip was all about ‘camping’ on the water and not sailing as such. For weather protection we made use of a large bimini we already had, temporarily fitting it over the boom. (We have since upgraded to a boom tent and smaller bimini’s located under the boom, so sailing is unaffected.) We explored by kayak when the tide was high or on foot at low tide. It was like living in two different worlds- an aquarium at high tide with marine life passing by underneath, or camping on a sandy beach at low tide. Having the luxury of returning to our Cygnet 20 base with all its amenities worked very well, making the upgrade from our much loved Hobie Tandem Island more than worthwhile.
