Achari Kunta Lake Rejuvenation Project, Hyderabad

Achari Kunta is an artificial lake near Venkatraya Nagar in the Nizampet Village of Bachupally Mandal, Medchal District of Telangana, India. The area faced water scarcity, and the lake’s water-holding capacity and recharge had depleted due to weather conditions and unplanned/unchecked waste discharge. The lake was facing several problems as it was open from all sides. The land around was uneven, without any proper pathway. The soil was sandy and unfertile, and the water was stinky. Buffaloes and other domestic animals regularly bathed inside the lake. The neighboring cowsheds dumped their organic waste directly into the lake. There were only a few trees were present. The community people wanted to use it walking, jogging, and playing. Therefore, there was a need to rejuvenate the lake. Hence iNaturewatch Foundation implemented lake rejuvenation activities with the help of DCB Bank, who funded the project and the local NGO partner, Prahari Trust who extended all liaising support. As part of the project activities, the biodiversity survey of the lake indicated, 50 species of birds, 53 species of Insects (36 butterfly sp.), two species of amphibians, eight species of reptiles and one species of Mammals. Compared to the 12 species of birds and two species of butterflies seen before plantation. The before and after soil and water test also showed positive results. Of the total 5000 saplings that were planted around the lake, 4933 were surviving, indication 1% mortality. SOME PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS- A dying lake has been revived with vibrant ecology • Entire plantation of 5000 plants survived successfully with 1% mortality rate. • Increase in the bird diversity from 12 species to 50 species and butterfly diversity from 2 species to 36 species. • The water and soil quality improved due to the rejuvenation activities. • Increased awareness among local community members, 276 participants were engaged in 10 community programmes. • Change in perceptions of the local community members who valued the rejuvenated lake. • Sustainability of project assured with sustained interest of the community member and municipal corporation.
