Seven years ago this November our daughter, Rebekah Faith Nickerson was granted a wish by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She told them her wish was to go to a Garth Brooks concert. Trouble was, at the time she made her wish Garth was not doing concerts. We waited over a year to see what would happen. There were talks of just having her go to his home in Oklahoma for a visit. Then we found out he decided to come out of retirement and do a series of concerts in Kansas City, Missouri. The Make-A-Wish Foundation had a limousine pick us up at our house and take us to the Peoria Airport. They flew us to Kansas City and put us up in a nice hotel. I told our sons, Ben and Logan, that I thought we would just be in a long line of people, take our turn, then move on. I was way off. Mr. Brooks treated us like royalty. We were taken back to his personal dressing room before the concert started where he talked to us like we had known each other for years. While he got dressed for the concert, he had his assistant take her into a side room filled with his cd's and tshirts and took her "shopping". In the meantime, his wife, Trisha Yearwood, had been on stage performing. She finished her set, came into the room and visited with us. We got pictures with both of them. Then Mr. Brooks asked if we had some time the next day that we could come back. He asked Rebekah if she played and instrument and she replied "the drums". This was news to the rest of us. He said, "We want you to come back for our sound check tomorrow before the concert and you can play the drums!" Then it was time to go to the concert. His concerts are like no concert I had ever been to. 50,000+ people on their feet for two hours singing every word to every song right along with him. Unbelievable! My dad bought a ticket to see the concert, and was in the audience somewhere. It blew his mind, and he went out afterwards and bought some Garth Brooks cd's of his own. The next day we were shown in to the arena. Garth wasn't there right away, but the band was on stage practicing. They took Rebekah up onto the stage and let her play the drums. The band surrounded her and played the song, "Two Pina Coladas" (that's the song she said was her favorite) while she wailed away on the drums. It was priceless. Then she sat back down in front of the stage. A man entered wearing one of their security guard jumpers and sat next to Rebekah and put his arm around her. It was Garth. He led her up on the stage and they sang one song after another with her, giving her a microphone and having her parade around the stage with them. Then they sang "We Shall Be Free" where they all came to the front of the stage, hands raised for a big concert finish. They came off of the stage, he let Rebekah keep a tambourine, set of drum sticks and the microphone she used. He told us he took the batteries out so she couldn't turn it on during the concert. Then he invited us to go backstage to eat with the band, and to come back again for the concert that night. During the concert while singing the song "We Shall Be Free", he walked over to the side of the stage, looked for Rebekah and drew a heart on his chest and pointed to her. We can't say enough for Make-A-Wish or for Garth Brooks and his people. It was priceless.
