Railfanning Erie, PA at Amtrak Union Station

I had my eye on doing some train watching while on vacation to Erie, PA. and I did just that. There was a parade of foreign power coming through Erie the two days we railfanned. We spotted seven different railroads for power including Canadian Pacific, CSX, Union Pacific, Canadian National, CEFX, Norfolk Southern, and Amtrak. CSX 323, the L&N sticker engine, made an appearance completely unexpected 2nd out on an intermodal heading West. Both days were sunny and cool. Sorry for the shakiness of some parts in advance. We set up at the old Erie Union Station, now mostly taken over by local businesses. World War II was the peak of new American railway travel, and the demand for the volume of trains increased. Back in the day, there were eight different tracks here, all with platforms paralleling them. The current station was shared by the New York Central and the Pennsylvania Railroads in the late 1920’s all the way to 1968 when the two merged to form Penn Central. Only three years later, the station was taken over by Amtrak. My grandfather took a train from Erie to Buffalo, NY when he was drafted into the army in 1950. He remembers being pulled by an enormous steam locomotive and a bustling Union Station at the height of its service. He also recalls going to the station with his uncle in 1941, at the age of eleven. 75 years later, he discusses it with his grandson. Only two daily passenger trains run through Erie today; Amtrak trains 48/49, the Lake Shore Limited with service from Chicago to New York and vice versa. CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Amtrak all run trains by Union Station. According to other railfans, Erie sees 55-70 CSX trains daily, 12-16 NS trains daily, and 2 Amtraks. Unfortunately, we could only stay for about an hour and a half the first day, and maybe 45 minutes the second. Ten trains is great for a couple hours spent at the historic Erie Union Station. I hope you enjoy this video and quick history lesson! Train #1 at 12:23pm. CSX Q264 Autoracks from Cleveland, OH - Framingham, MA CSXT #5429 ES44DC CSXT #5356 ES40DC Train #2 at 12:29pm.
