Kia revealed the brand-new Kia K4 sedan at the New York International Auto Show with baby Stinger styling and a choice between a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a 190-hp 1.6 turbo-four mill. The K4 sits below its K5 sibling in the lineup, and with its compact proportions and efficiency-minded engines, it is here to replace the aging Forte as one of the cheaper Kia sedans in the USA. Kia has labeled the exterior design approach as "Twist Logic," which is said to create "a modern and unique body shape by twisting the connections of logically aligned squares in a seemingly illogical fashion." Since we only were given a brief look at the hatch, this story will focus largely on the sedan, whose profile reveals a four-door with fastback styling which contrasts with the current, two-box setup of the Forte. The base 2.0-liter inline-4 carries over, making 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. It uses a continuously variable transmission to send power to the front wheels. We haven’t been a fan of this setup in the past, faulting it for being dull and loud, but we’ll see how the new body carries it. The GT-Line Turbo uses a 1.6-liter turbo-4 making 190 hp and 195 lb-ft; the previous turbo-4 made 201 hp. It has an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddles, and both the Turbo and the GT-Line lite swap out a torsion-beam rear axle for a multi-link independent suspension that should settle the rear more. The front axle is bound by struts. New, luxurious interior outfits include Medium Gray, Slate Green, and Onyx Black colorways. A wide sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, and premium Harman Kardon audio are all available, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim. Out back, the trunk space affords 14.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Virtual Digital Key 2.0 is available for NFC-equipped cards or devices to unlock doors or transfer access to someone else remotely.
