I used to struggle so much to paint hair. I’d paint a reasonable looking face, then laboriously try to paint every strand of hair perfectly but it would always come out looking stringy and weird. Luckily, since I had a background in animation I had been introduced to these craft brushes when I was painting backgrounds for Ren and Stimpy. The brushes were called “grainer brushes.” They have some long hairs and some short hairs and I used them to paint wood grain and grass. Then I figured out that they actually easily paint absolutely perfect hair! The trick to using them for hair is to use zig-zagging brushstrokes that cut across the forms of the head, which is something I show in detail in my hair painting online course. You can use them for all textures of hair, from straight, wavy and curly hair. For this painting I wiggled the brush from side to side a little to create the soft texture of the curly hair.
