This is something I see in the gym all the time (especially when it comes to bench press spotters) and it's quite honestly one of the silliest bodybuilding mistakes you can make. If your workout partner (or personal trainer) isn't using proper spotting technique, it can legitimately ruin the muscle building stimulus from your set. Aside from cases where more advanced lifters are employing high intensity techniques (like forced reps or slow negatives), bench press spotting (or just spotting when working out in general) should only be used for safety reasons on a select few lifts.
