It was built in 1873 to warn ships of the dangerous Alligator Reef, which has claimed the lives of many sailors over the years. Today, Alligator Reef Lighthouse is a popular tourist destination, and it is also one of the best places to snorkel in the Florida Keys. The waters around the lighthouse are crystal clear and home to a wide variety of marine life, including colorful fish, coral reefs, and even sea turtles.
