Hi Everyone! Gaby and I hiked 15 miles passing lakes 1-3 to reach the stunning Sam Mack Meadow on our wonderful Big Pine Lakes hike. The trail is located in Big Pine, California in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is varied terrain with few descents, some flat sections, and mostly gradual inclines. Trailhead elevation starts at 7800' and increases to 10,000' to 11,000' depending on where you are on the trail. Pack 2 to 3 liters of water and begin the trail early (5am or earlier, seriously!) if you are day hiking on weekends. Strongly suggest bringing ibuprofen if headaches begin at higher altitudes. Camping is allowed but a permit needs to be secured through Recreation.gov months or weeks in advance. There are campsites as well near the trailhead such as Upper Sage, a small day use parking lot, and and an overnight parking lot.
