Using the 3:1 model can feel overwhelming. BUT, I believe this is one of the best models to support your work as a school-based SLP. The 3:1 model helps you streamline your services, make sure what you do is related to what your students are doing in the classroom, supports collaboration, and makes you more effective for your students. SAMPLE of Flexible Service Model language for your IEP: Speech/language services will be provided by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) using the flexible service-delivery model. In the flexible service-delivery model, services are provided outside of the classroom three weeks a month and one week per month is an 'indirect service' week at which time services could include, but are not limited to: classroom observation, teacher collaboration, parent consultation, co-teaching with teacher, small group activities, program planning, preparation of materials, and collaboration with and training of staff who work with the student. The flexible service delivery model helps promote the carryover and generalization of learned skills taught by the SLP in the pull-out setting to the classroom setting and allows services to be aligned with the curriculum used by the teacher. EMAIL: I always emailed teachers the week before consultation week with my schedule attached. My email would (1) ask them if there was anything they wanted support with (2) ask about areas our shared students were struggling with (3) make sure there weren’t any schedule changes that would interrupt my classroom time and (4) see if they wanted me to come at a different time. At the end of every email, I would remind teachers about the WHY behind my time in the classrooms: Quick reminder of my consult week goals: 📑 learn more about what the students are learning 👂listen for academic vocabulary they need to understand 👀 see what skills they need to access the curriculum 🤔 think about how their disability impacts their access to what's being taught 💁 support their carryover of therapy strategies into classroom activities Not sure your services are “related?” Check out my video on what that means here: Are your SLP services related?
