How Security Scanners Work

This video is a summary of the DiQual module on Security Search Technology. It takes a look at the main tools and technology that is available to aid the search procedure. It is not always convenient, necessary or respectful to open up a bag and empty out the contents to manually search through them. Therefore we can use machines to help in the search process. Some detect metal, some detect explosives and narcotics and some see right through the outer layer of the containment to reveal what is inside. This module discusses their uses, their limitations and in some cases, their safety concerns. The necessity to search seems to be increasing due to an increase in terrorism and the associated news stories. However, searching is not just about finding bombs and weapons to thwart a terrorist attack. Search is equally about finding organic (plant or animal) material for biosecurity, it’s about finding narcotics, illegal imports and dangerous goods that could create a problem in the hold of an airplane. At a museum, a theatre or festival, the risk assessment will be different and the search might be looking for weapons, relatively small amounts of narcotics, anything that could be used for a political statement or could damage the reputation of the event. On leaving a government or commercial facility, the search might ensure that official secrets or intellectual property does not leave without authorisation. Search procedures are an organised and methodical way of checking to see if someone has anything about their person that is prohibited before they enter or leave an area. The process should be quick, professional and discreet.
