A severe case of the flu put Cindy Grau in the hospital ...for two months. The Shellsburg, Iowa woman doesn't remember much of her first month at St. Luke's. "All of my major organs were shutting down and the only thing beating was my heart," said Grau. "There are about two to three cases in the state of Iowa annually that get this sick -- that the flu leaves a patient with multi organ failure. Her lungs were not working, her kidneys were not working and she was so weak she was unable to eat or swallow anymore," said Dr. Stan Mathew, St. Luke's Physical Medicine and Rehab. Grau finally came around and needed occupational and physical therapy from st. Luke's physical medicine and rehabilitation to get her moving once again. "Every patient is different and she was so debilitated it took over two months of inpatient rehab to get her to the point where she was safe to go home," said Dr. Mathew. Grau is happy to be home and continuing her therapy on an out-patient basis....she's getting stronger each day. "I just love them. They are wonderful people. They know what they are doing. They work you, they work you very hard," said Grau.
