The psoas is the darling of hip flexion. LIke any famous muscle, it requires help from its friends, in this case the iliacus and rectus femoris. However there are often unsung heroes picking up the slack in the background, the iliacus, sartorius, even the gracilis (an inner thigh muscle) assists. In this video, Jill goes over these muscles but puts the rolling spotlight on the sartorius. The sartorius is a multi faceted muscle that flexes and externally rotates the hip and flexes (bends) the knee. Using the ball stack technique, attempt to compress the flesh around the front hip bone (ASIS) to find and knead the sartorius tendon. Follow with a toted pair of YTU Therapy Balls and slowly move and slither from the ASIS (front hip bone) to the knee. Using a single soft YTU Therapy Ball, shear the pes anserine, where the sartorius, gracilis and semitendinosus join together. Once completed, recheck the sartorius by flexing, externally rotating, and slightly abducting (look at the bottom of your foot) your leg, giving a silent thank you to our lesser known friends.
