How To Grow Bananas In North Florida

Here's how to grow bananas in North Florida! (More on bananas and lots more gardening inspiration at http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com). Alright - folks think you can't grow bananas in North Florida and get many fruit; or if you do get fruit, you'll only get it from finger banana types. Not true! Growing bananas up north just requires fast-growing trees with a little cold tolerance, such as Raja Puri bananas, or the Orinoco bananas featured in this video. Yes, you'll lose some fruit to frost now and again, but an established patch of bananas isn't going to get killed during a North Florida winter. Particularly if you're protecting bananas from frost at least a little by planting them beside a south-facing wall or in another sheltered location. Banana circles are always good, too. A tight grouping helps with frost protection. Don't prune your bananas after the winter - let them grow back on their own or else you'll set them back and possibly keep them from bearing fruit early enough in the year. Don't even remove the frost-burned leaves - leave them alone until it's safe! Growing bananas in cold climates (well, colder - not super cold!) where it frosts may require a little bit of work but it's totally worth it.
