Spoleto is a small but important Italian city, lying 125km north of Rome. In ancient times, it lay on a major trading route. The first known inhabitants, the Ubrians, built defensive stone walls about 2500 years ago, the remains of which can be seen today. The hill fort, or castle, which lies just above the city of Spoleto, is host to an important performing arts festival. This fort contains a large internal courtyard, lending itself to performances and displays. The hill fort also contains a small but well-presented museum, show-casing a variety of ancient art.
