The Thunder Force series is well known beyond shmup players for a good reason : the games are brilliant. Sadly this episode was not developed by Technosoft and certainly does not reach the epicness of its predecessors. It is not a bad game per say but it feels bland compared to past games from the series. Visually it has not aged well but the issue for me is more about how it can become confusing. Cave titles certainly throw more stuff at the players and are not confusing for the player. The soundtrack is not as epic as previous episodes, and it certainly lacks any challenge. The weapon array is the same as Thunder Force V IIRC, with the addition of a smart bomb which greatly increases the player’s firepower for a few seconds. It's a great addition to the old recipe but it’s not well balanced. The final boss is really cool though ! I learned the game pretty quickly while trying the PS2 using the OSSC and my flat monitor so I certainly did not spend a lot of time on this one. It’s easy and the bomb makes some bosses trivial.
