Conquering Bedwetting: Pediatrician’s Tips for Parents and Kids

I’m Dr. Mona Amin, a board-certified pediatrician and mom, and I’m here to talk about nighttime bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis. I explain that wetting the bed is quite common for children over 5 who are otherwise potty trained, and it can often run in families. I cover both primary and secondary bedwetting causes, such as delays in the brain-bladder connection, small bladder capacity, or pelvic floor dysfunction. I also discuss when it’s important to consult a clinician, especially if there are red flags like pain, excessive thirst, or blood in urine. I share practical tips for managing bedwetting, including avoiding certain foods and drinks, staying positive, and involving your child in clean-up to reduce embarrassment. For ongoing issues, I touch on options like bedwetting alarms and medications, but I stress that shaming or punishing your child is not helpful. I encourage patience as most children will outgrow bedwetting with time. Any questions we didn't address in this video? Ideas for a future topic to cover? Let us know in the comments.
