'Of Tokens and Traders' | Heritage Open Day Talk

"Of Tokens and Traders" - Tales of 17th Century grocers, gardeners and cutlers to candlestick makers Dr Adrian Marsden returns with “More Tales behind the Tokens” issued by traders here in Norwich during the 17th century. We shall learn more of the fascinating history of these tokens together with the men and women who issued them. Following last year’s sell out talk, Dr Adrian Marsden, Numismatist from the Norfolk Historic Environment Service explains how people and businesses in the 17th century, depended on privately struck tokens for a penny, halfpenny, or farthing. Many Norwich shops and businesses issued these tokens and, during this informative talk we shall learn more about the people and businesses who issued them. These were the grocers, gardeners, cutlers, and candlestick makers. Dr Marsden takes us on a fascinating journey to the Norwich of the Commonwealth and Restoration period and brings to life more stories during this talk.
