Sunburn Tattoos and the Risk of Skin Cancer

Dr. Michael Conroy, a dermatologist at OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital, discusses the risks associated with sunburn tattoos. The art of creating sunburn tattoos is a dangerous, new summer fad that involves placing a stencil on top of one’s skin and then deliberately getting a sunburn so that the pattern becomes a temporary “tattoo.” According to Dr. Conroy, sunburns (both deliberate and undeliberate) can trigger skin cancer later on in life. However, because many young people tend to brush off concerns about skin cancer, Dr. Conroy also warns that sunburns can prematurely age the skin. “You can hit home with them when you’re talking about, well, when you’re 30, you’re probably going to look like you’re 38 or 40,” explains Dr. Conroy. “And that starts to ring a bell a little bit for those guys.” Even though young people may pay more attention to warnings against aging skin rather than cancer, cancer is still the biggest concern from a physician’s standpoint. This is why Dr. Conroy also makes it a point to remind us that we should be aware of tanning as well, as there is no such thing as a “safe tan.” For information on skin cancer, please visit http://bit.ly/1VwYv9x What are your thoughts on sunburn tattoos?
