'Hymn to the Sea' (Titanic theme tune) by James Horner - variation and improvisation by Rabode

The Titanic Theme tune - a journey through love, loss, identity and finding yourself. Ever felt completely disconnected from who you truly are and your environment, society, culture and the people within it? Ever felt lonely in a crowd or a room full of people? Part of the reason many people love music and covet the ability to actually play a musical instrument and create unique compositions, songs and melodies (rather than just be a carbon copy of other people) is because your playing becomes akin to your own personal fingertip impression – completely unique and an expression of who you are. Other people may not get it and identify with this, but do not ever let that stop you being who you are because you are unique and you speak to your people! That’s not all people – but your people! Social media and the wider society can brainwash and condition people to covet quantity over quality and authenticity. But if you remain true to yourself then your music will add value to the lives of your people. And those who value your music are the only ones who matter. Because those who value your music will be the ones who understand the process of true artistic composition, rather than the superficial levels of ‘music’ creation and duplication that we see all around us today. There is a story of a starfish I like to tell sometimes to illustrate the value of quality over quantity, and humanity over carelessness, and feeling over emptiness, and a full heart over an empty one, and it goes something like this: One day a young boy was walking along the beach and the beach was covered with starfish that had washed up on the sand due to a bad storm, all along from one end of the beach to the other. So the young boy started picking them up and putting them into his plastic bucket he had brought to build sandcastles. He kept filling the bucket with starfish then he’d go down to the sea and throw each one back into the water, one by one, trying to save them. Until a man passing him by shouted ‘Hey why you doing that? It’s totally pointless and makes no difference. There’s too many starfish there little guy!’ The little boy looked back at the man, picked another starfish from his bucket, chucked it in the water and shouted back ‘it makes a difference to that one Mister’. In this way, your heart, your soul, your musical contribution to the world goes on….even if it affects and helps just one little starfish for the better.
