L2 Nerve Root Motor: Hip flexion: Assess the iliopsoas muscle by asking the patient to lift their thigh against resistance. Sensory: Dermatome: Anterior thigh. Reflexes: None typically tested. L3 Nerve Root Motor: Knee extension: Assess the quadriceps muscle by asking the patient to extend their knee against resistance. Sensory: Dermatome: Medial aspect of the thigh and knee. Reflexes: Patellar reflex (also involves L4). L4 Nerve Root Motor: Ankle dorsiflexion: Assess the tibialis anterior muscle by asking the patient to dorsiflex (pull the foot upwards) against resistance. L5 Nerve Root Motor: Great toe extension: Assess the extensor hallucis longus by asking the patient to extend their big toe against resistance. Foot dorsiflexion: Assess the tibialis anterior muscle. Hip abduction: Assess the gluteus medius muscle by asking the patient to abduct (move the leg away from the midline) against resistance. Sensory: Dermatome: Lateral aspect of the lower leg and dorsum of the foot, including the big toe.
