There are both internal heater bypasses and external heater bypasses and they are doing different things for your system. Internal bypasses are rare, and designed to allow most of the pool system water to bypass the heater internals when there is no call for heat, thereby improving system performance when the heater is not running. An external heater bypass would not be used the same way. It would be used to periodically take your heater offline during periods of time where the water quality is poor or your sanitizer levels are too high.
