This 43 minute opus takes the viewer on an atomic-powered journey into the life and times of one of America's greatest maritime marvels, the NS SAVANNAH. Conceived by President Eisenhower as a floating ambassador to the peaceful use of nuclear power, the SAVANNAH was a joint project of the US Atomic Energy Commission, the US Maritime Administration and the US Department of Commerce. The NS SAVANNAH, which was designed to be the sleekest ship afloat by marine architect George G. Sharp, was never intended to be a commercially successful ship, thankfully, as she only operated eight years in both passenger/cargo and later cargo-only service. She was, however, extremely successful as atomic power's peaceful role model and was visited by over 1.5 million people. Now resting at Pier 13 in Baltimore following the safe removal of her nuclear reactor, the SAVANNAH is one of the most beautifully preserved ships in the world, from her glistening, yachtlike hull to her fully intact bridge and engine room and her magnificent MidCentury interiors, which were created by celebrated New York designer Jack Heaney. She also has the distinction of having what is probably the only walk-through nuclear reactor space in the world. The catch is that SAVANNAH must find a permanent home before the end of 2025, or she may suffer the same fate as the SS UNITED STATES -- reefing -- or, even worse, scrapping. Join Knego for a very detailed, top-to-bottom tour of this beautiful ship and let's SAVE THIS SHIP!
