The Aizu Nishi Kaido was a edomain road in the Edo period that connected Aizu Wakamatsu City in Fukushima Prefecture, where Aizu Wakamatsu Castle is located, and Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture. However, the Aizu Nishi Kaido became dysfunctional due to the severe crackdown on the side road traffic by the Edo Shogunate and the collapse caused by the 1683 Nikko Earthquake, and the role as a main road was transferred to the Aizu Naka Kaido. After that, the Aizu Nishi Kaido, which had been dysfunctional due to the collapse of the dammed lake due to heavy rain, was restored. However, it is believed that the Aizu Nakakaido has already played a role as an alternative route, and as a result, Ouchi-juku has become a "half-agricultural and half-inn." At the same time as the railway opened due to modernization, Ouchi-juku lost its role as a post town.
