Volunteer Outdoor Recreation Trip Leader Skills - The Model

The Volunteer Trip Leadership Model provides the organizational structure for the outdoor leader modules, present and future. The video discusses the relationship between the different modules to the model. They address becoming a volunteer outdoor recreation trip leader. A volunteer outdoor recreation trip leader assumes a volunteer thrust into a leadership role. The volunteer leader has little, if any, outdoor experience. They are not professionals in the traditional sense, with extensive skills and experience. They don’t have the time or resources to obtain extensive training and experience either, two or three hours or perhaps a weekend. The issue is what are the minimum skills that the volunteer leader needs to have to be successful, and to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for participants? The model provides an organizational structure for the accompanying individual modules. Consult additional resources as needed. Think of the model and modules as a starting point for gaining the minimal skills needed to have a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience. At the center of the model is the volunteer outdoor recreation trip leader. Moving outward, the model is divided into hard and soft skills. Hard skills include the activity or activity specific skills and camping and outdoor skills. Soft skills include organizational, instructional, and facilitation skills. The model serves as a table of contents for the related modules. The model serves as the organizational structure. Its contents are listed below. Some of them relate directly to the topic areas and others are supplemental. More will be added in the future. In the video, the activity specific skills focus on paddling.
