SOUNDBITE (English) Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Ousted Haitian President: "Today instead of Europe we are welcome in Africa, our mother continent, our temporary home until we can return to Haiti. Of course the Haitian situation must be normalised and peace must be restored through democratic order. The solidarity shared by South Africa, Caricom (15-member Caribbean Community) and the Organisation of African Union to promote peace and democracy in Haiti crystallises the worldwide unity that will continue to flourish." 15. Aristide and South African president Thabo Mbeki leaving press conference STORYLINE: Ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide arrived in South Africa on Monday where he will be allowed to live in exile until he can safely return to Haiti. Before leaving Jamaica for asylum in South Africa, Aristide insisted he was still the elected president of Haiti and promised to return someday. He fled his country on 29 February as rebels approached the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. He later claimed he was overthrown by the United States, a charge Washington denies. In a welcome usually reserved for visiting heads of state, Aristide was greeted at the airport by South African President Thabo Mbeki and a delegation of Cabinet ministers and an African Union official. The ousted leader and his wife, Mildred, were embraced by Mbeki as they stepped off the South African presidential jetliner that brought them, their two young daughters and their bodyguards from Jamaica. In a brief comment to reporters at the airport, Aristide thanked South Africa and the African Union and said he was glad to be in Africa. The South African government has said Aristide and his entourage can live in Pretoria at South African government expense until such time as it is safe for them to return to Haiti. The offer to cover Aristide's expenses has brought criticism from South Africa's political opposition. Aristide's move to Jamaica in March angered Haiti's new US-backed interim government, which worried that his presence in the region would further destabilise Haiti, just 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of the US. The 15-member Caribbean Community has refused to recognise Haiti's new government, and has called on the Washington-based Organisation of American States to investigate the circumstances of Aristide's departure.
