Dell PowerEdge R930 Server Review & Overview | Memory Install Tips | How to Configure DDR4 DIMMs

The Dell PowerEdge R930 is an enterprise level 4U rackmount server. This systems is powered by four Intel Xeon processors and DDR4 memory architecture. In this video, we will go over the different speeds, sizes types as well as how to upgrade, install and configure memory inside the PowerEdge R930 server. Part of Dell’s 13th Generation, the R930 is the next gen to the Dell PowerEdge R920 server. In total, there are 96 DIMM slots backed by DDR4 memory architecture. The 13th gen is the first generation of DDR4 servers from Dell. The R930 is an excellent option to set up multiple virtual environments. Let’s discuss more about the memory and procs. The PowerEdge R930 operates on DDR4 memory and there are 96 DIMM slots across 8 memory riser. Each riser has 12 DIMM slots. The R930 RAM speed options include: 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s and 2666MT/s. Please note, that 2666MT/s will in fact clock down to 2400MT/s, which is the true fastest speed. Technically you can install 2933 or 3200MT/s speed modules, but they will also clock down to 2400. There is no need in speeding extra money if you don’t have to. DIMM size options include: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB memory. Note, 64GBs & 128GBs only work with one type of memory for the R930. And that bring us to… What types of RAM are compatible with the PowerEdge R930? You can use two types of memory when configuring your server: ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With LRDIMMs you can achieve quadruple the overall scalability compared to RDIMMs. The max configuration is 3TB via (96 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-R 2400MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. Whereas, the max configuration is 12TB via (96 x 128GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-L 2400MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. There is a distinct scalability advantage with LRDIMM. The PowerEdge R930 has four Intel Xeons CPUs. They accept E7-4800v3 or v4 and E7-8800v3 or v4 series processors. Each processor controls 2 memory risers and each riser controls 12 memory slots. There are 8 memory risers for a total of 96 DIMM slots. Yes you heard that right. A whooping 96 DIMM slots. There are 4 Memory Channels per memory riser. There are 3 DIMM slots per Memory Channel. Dell has labeled and color coded each memory slot. This will make it easier to identify the correct way to install your memory upgrades. For best performance, you should install your modules at the start of the memory channel. Each memory channel starts with white followed by black and then green. An even distribution will provide overall higher performance. The proper configuration per memory riser should be in sets of 4… so 4, 8 or 12 modules to maintain an even and balanced load distribution across the memory channels. In this video, we will discuss in more depth how and where to actually install the DIMMs inside your PowerEdge R930 server. Interested in buying a refurbished Dell PowerEdge R930 Server?
