Philosophy seems to be caught in a quagmire. In the world of philosophy, everything is contested. What seemed certain then becomes fraught with doubt. No answers seem available, only questions. No sure place to plant our feet but only mere possibilities. Yet we can’t seem to stop wondering about things since it is in our nature to wonder. Our best thinkers relentlessly come up with theories only to have them attacked from every angle. Perhaps they provide a defence and others may rally to their side, in what feels like an increasingly technical war of words. But even when ordinary people try to apply philosophy, we find ourselves pulled in many disparate directions. I will cursorily examine four major fields in philosophy in turn, political philosophy, metaphysics, ethics and epistemology, to see how we are kept in this state of tension.
