Bladder Outlet Obstruction (BOO) occurs when there is a blockage at the base of the bladder, which restricts urine flow. This obstruction can cause bilateral hydronephrosis, where both kidneys swell due to the buildup of urine. Common causes of BOO include an enlarged prostate (in men), urethral strictures, or bladder stones. Symptoms may include difficulty urinating, frequent urination, weak urine flow, and lower abdominal pain. If left untreated, it can lead to kidney damage. Diagnosis is typically done through imaging tests like an ultrasound or CT scan, along with urodynamic studies. Treatment may involve medications to relax the bladder or relieve the blockage, but severe cases often require surgical intervention. Bipolar Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat BOO, especially in cases caused by an enlarged prostate. During the procedure, a resectoscope is inserted into the urethra, and excess prostate tissue is removed to restore normal urine flow. This helps relieve pressure on the bladder and kidneys, reducing bilateral hydronephrosis. Bipolar TURP uses a saline solution, which minimizes risks such as bleeding or fluid absorption.
