Vongon creates effects with a distinct retro vibe, calling to mind vintage wood-paneled analog synthesizers and modular studio setups, but with modern flexibility, and a penchant for an intuitive, tactile user experience that makes them at home anywhere, from guitar pedalboard to desktop production station. The Vongon Ultrasheer and Paragraphs are perfect examples of this approach. The Ultrasheer is a stereo in/out reverb and pitch vibrato inspired by classic studio effects. Its lush modulation can go from subtle warble to Leslie rotating speaker tones, while its reverb engine is based on the legendary plate setting from the Lexicon 224. Its pristine audio quality and highly flexible routing make it a very capable sonic enhancement tool in any music making scenario. The Vongon Paragraphs is an all-analog low pass filter with a highly intuitive interface, and an attack, decay envelope generator that covers an unusually wide frequency range. The centerpiece of its filter is the AS3320 analog chip, a modern component designed to replicate the sound and response of the one found in many vintage synths, from the Sequential Prophet 5, to the LinnDrumm. Paragraphs can accept a broad range of input signals, from instrument to line level, and its input and output capabilities give you the option to generate some very satisfying onboard dirt, should pristine cleans not be your thing. Inputs for CV and MIDI let Paragraphs easily integrate into any synth or sequencer setup. In this wide-ranging demo video, Ben Wright employs the Vongon Ultrasheer and Paragraphs in multiple recording scenarios, from guitar, bass, and keys, to drum machine processing and even whistles. He makes the most of the Ultrasheer’s stereo routing, processing each side of the stereo field with different effects in the Tele-powered opening piece, and then laying down some lush, vibrato-drenched whistle overdubs. A warm Fender Rhodes piano sound gets the full Paragraphs treatment, while a fat, distorted auto-wah guitar tone is called up for a heavy groove that references vintage west coast hip-hop.
