Can AVN be reversed? Doctor busts myth!

We are here to tell you that it is completely unscientific claim (at least till today scientific literature has not a clear cut claim about any gold standard treatment which can reverse AVN) because such a thing is not scientifically possible so far (video was recorded in July 2023). Let’s know about the mechanism by which AVN happens. AVN cuts off the blood supply to the ball of hip joint (FEMORAL HEAD). Essentially, it leads to the death of bone of femoral head. Now if that death of bone happens in the weight bearing area of femoral head and if it’s more that 50% of bone then collapse of ball is very much likely. Please know that in Stage1 & in some cases of stage 2- with proper medications it’s possible to stop the progression of AVN. It’s possible and we treat many carefully selected patients of stage 1 & 2 AVN with non operative or medical treatment. But it doesn’t mean that their AVN was reversed, rather this treatment stops the progression of disease and prevents the bone from collapsing (which changes the shape of femoral ball (head). Reversing AVN would be equivalent to bringing dead bone back to life - which is outside the realm of possibility. Sure, in Stage 1 & some cases of AVN stage 2, a patient can be treated with medications so that his AVN does not progress. But if he continues the lifestyle that led him to have AVN in the first place (consuming steroids for any reason, drinking excessive alcohol or other reason), his AVN progression will not stop inspite of best medical treatment. Of course, in Stage 3, or 4 there is too much damage to stop it with just medicine. But even in stage 3 if the patients are painfree or have minimal pain, for which the patient doesn’t consume pain killers regularly then one can wait and don’t need to go for total hip replacement immediately. But if there is persistent pain and limp then it’s not recommended to postpone total hip replacement surgery. If someone is claiming that he can reverse AVN, ask him the following questions: 1. Was it actually AVN? Was the diagnosis confirmed? 2. How can he prove that he actually reversed it? Which investigation was done to prove that earlier it was stage 2/3 or 4 and not AVN can’t be seen ? 3. On how many patients did they conduct this study ? 4. In which medical journal did they publish their study and its findings? No one will be able to pass the above test. Because reversing AVN is not medically possible so far! So arm yourself against false medical promises by learning the right information about your ailments. We hope this video helped clear some doubts about AVN and its treatments.
