Bienenstock began as an artistic experiment to treating video content from, and contextualizing the subjective experience of, people during live happenings. In the broadest sense it is a cross-media system for crowdsourced video documentation. It has been presented as both physical installations and as a multi layered online environment. Bienenstock is the German word for beehive, and this serves as the central metaphor: like in a society of bees, registered participants swarm out, capture footage of an event from a multitude of perspectives and return it (at the hive) to be ingested into the collective pool. The intention was to challenge traditional documentary approaches and explore an application for dealing with modern video content. A key objective was to create a system that utilises the potential of readily available subjective video apparatus and the growing online trend of immediate (quick & dirty) AV expressionism. The project was realized, and continues to be developed, through a collaboration between Ars Electronica and Queensland University of Technology. It was first presented at the Ars Electronica Festival 2013 and has since had several iterations. www.aec.at/bienenstock Credits: Original Concept: Martin Honzik (AT) Horst Hörtner (AT) Kristefan Minski (AT/AU) Gerfried Stocker (AT) Research Lead: Kristefan Minski (AT/AU) Lincoln Savage (AU) Research Advisors: Jared Donovan (AU) Horst Hörtner (AT) Richard Vella (AU) Special Thanks: Veronika Liebl (AT) An Ars Electronica & Queensland University of Technology Collaboration NB. full list of credits available on the video
