I did not pioneer this technique. I learned it in the 80's from a documentary about how some African countries were coping with pollution from modern, western influence and from being industrialized. As raw materials become harder to obtain and more strictly regulated, waste product is the new raw material. As our ancestors did, I try to use what is readily available in my work whenever possible. I did not use a pattern. I improvise the design and just crochet until it's the size and shape I like. Obviously, please do not use degradable bags for this. I'm using HDPE (high density polyethylene) #2 plastic grocery bags that are still readily available in my area. 4mm hook. SC for the bottom. SC, CH1 for the top. I used up about 125 grocery bags for the large tote once I added the handles. And I used up about 52 grocery bags for the smaller cord purse.
