Celtworld To Be Replaced With Dinosaurs (1997)

Celtworld to be occupied by dinosaurs after running into financial difficulties. Celtworld, the educational theme park and heritage centre in Tramore county Waterford, has been bought by a tourism investor with plans to reopen it as a dinosaur theme park. Celtworld with its mythological story opened in Tramore in 1992 and was projected as being one of the top tourist attractions in the country. It was hoped that 270,000 people would visit the centre but not even half that number ever saw the show and Celtworld closed in 1995 suffering big losses. The original cost of setting up Celtworld was £4.5 million. £1.8 million of this came from European funding. A total of 67 investors lost money when it closed. It is now reported that the centre has been bought by Phelim McCloskey of the Mosney Holiday Centre, who plans to open a dinosaur theme park on 1 June. An RTÉ News report broadcast on 25 April 1997.
