FOSSIL PREP | EXTINCT SPECIES OF CRAB

Join me as I prepare this sweet Actinotocarcinus sp. This was a bit of a repair job, as when I cracked the rock open initially, the crab split unevenly, and pieces were on both sides of the two halves. This is where super glue comes in handy for a fossil preparator, lots of super glue! Distinctive in physicality and nature, and fairly rare, the Actinotocarcinus genus has very little surrounding research. I am very happy to come across another of this species, which helps with further identification. I have come across this great paper from Jenkins (1974), which I believe is the last time that the Actinotocarcinus has been studied. Some insight here as to the naming of this species: "Derivation of name, Actinoto, from the Greek adjective actinotos, rayed, in reference to the rayed pattern of the spines of the carapace; carcinus, from the Greek carcinos, crab. Reference: R. J. F. Jenkins (1974). "A new spider-crab from the Miocene of New Zealand" From the Miocene strata of New Zealand | aged approximately 9 MILLION years
