Add a burst of sunshine to your garden with Rudbeckia!

Rudbeckias add a real splash of colour in late summer and early autumn. The bees also love them and we need to support our bees. Native to North America, rudbeckia is also known as coneflower, because of its distinctive conical centre, and black-eyed Susan. Rudbeckia likes full sun and a reasonably fertile, moisture-retentive soil. It may wilt in prolonged dry spells so it may be a good idea to mulch it in the spring to conserve moisture. There are a range of cultivars of rudbeckia nowadays in a range of yellow, orange and bronze, some crossed with echinacea which have a slightly different flower form. The seed heads of rudbeckia look good in the winter and provide food for birds and shelter for wildlife, so don’t cut them back until the spring.
